The Abai Opera and Ballet Theatre, the drama houses and the small independent stages — theatre in Almaty.
Opera and ballet belong to the Abai theatre; classical drama is split between the Auezov, playing in Kazakh, and the Lermontov, playing in Russian. Beside them sits the independent scene: ARTiSHOCK and forty- to eighty-seat rooms where a premiere runs a handful of times and closes.
In the large houses the ticket price is the tier and the row; in the small ones there is barely a difference, because the whole room is the front row. Children’s shows and matinees sell out noticeably faster than evening performances.
